NICKY DEVINE PHOTOGRAPHY
As a curious person, I am drawn to extraordinary people and places; as a photographer, I feel compelled to document them.

I was raised in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California, before moving to San Francisco to study Visual Anthropology. Concurrent with my studies at S.F.S.U, I took photo classes at the City College, and moved to New York in the winter of 2006 to be fully educated as a photographer at the School of Art & Design at Purchase College in New York. I recently received my B.F.A in December of 2008 and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Currently I live in South Philadelphia.

In the last two years I have interned at Magnum Photos in New York, been offered a 4-month internship with the VII Agency in Brooklyn, and in the Fall of 2008, assisted the Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer Edward Keating. Currently I am involved in The Flood Collective, an online gallery and group of young East Coast - based photographers.

In photography, I research my subjects in a documentary practice. By using my camera, I like to explore the narratives in everyday life, and to connect those pieces with an overall theme. My motivation for making photographs is a fascination with the world around me. Details, moments, gestures: all these things begin to add up when they move the space between light and dark. What happens when I make a photograph is completely attributed to the subject, all I do is place myself there to look. I could not live for any period of time without the distraction of these small, insignificant features in faces and facets of routine.

All color images where made with Fuji film 120/35mm and most black and white images made with Ilford film. Printed on Fuji C or Ilford Fiber Glossy. Shot with film either my Mamiya 645 Pro, Canon AE-1, or digitally with the Olympus EP-1 (unless specified).
